Historia del sitio
Teotihuacán was already ancient when the Aztecs stumbled onto it. Founded around 100 BCE, it grew into one of the largest cities in the world — 150,000 people at its peak, its Avenue of the Dead lined with palaces and painted temples, its Pyramid of the Sun rising 65 metres above a landscape that had never seen anything like it.
Then, around 550 CE, something went wrong. The centre burned. Whether by uprising, invasion, or slow collapse, we still don't know. By the time the Aztecs arrived seven centuries later, Teotihuacán was ruins — and they were so awed by them that they named the place "the city where men become gods" and made pilgrimages there.
What you walk today is the ceremonial core: two great pyramids, a 2 km avenue, palaces with murals still bright in their sheltered corners, and, since 2003, a tunnel discovered beneath the Feathered Serpent Temple that contained thousands of offerings and reoriented what we thought we knew about the city.

Por qué hacerlo
Because there is no other place on Earth quite like it. Because the sun comes up over the Pyramid of the Moon and the light does something to the Avenue of the Dead that no photograph has ever captured. Because you can climb to a viewing platform, look down 2 km of ceremonial road, and feel — briefly, palpably — the scale that a hundred and fifty thousand people worked at fifteen hundred years ago.
You do this so you have context for everything else you see in Mexico. Teotihuacán is upstream of the Aztecs, upstream of Cholula, upstream of half the country's iconography. Once you've walked it with a guide who can point at a stone and tell you why it's there, the National Museum in the city makes ten times more sense.
