Chiapas is Mexico's most different state — Tzotzil and Tzeltal communities, colonial mountain towns, and turquoise cascades. Two day tours to start with, both from Palenque or San Cristóbal.
Chiapas day tours
One waterfall day out of Palenque, one colonial-town day out of Tuxtla or Chiapa de Corzo. Book either separately, or combine them into a two-day loop.
Turquoise cascades in the jungle, half an hour from Palenque. Swim in tiered pools; a Ch'ol village runs the site.
Colonial mountain town at 2,200 m, plus the Tzotzil village of San Juan Chamula. Textiles, amber, and the cathedral of the Sun.
About the region
Chiapas is where the Maya lowlands meet the Sierra Madre. Its indigenous majority — 1.5 million Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Ch'ol, and Zoque speakers — has kept language, dress, and ceremony living in a way you don't see in most of Mexico.
Our two Chiapas tours are run by two different local operators, both certified by CANIRAC-Chiapas and both employing indigenous guides. You pay one price; they pay their staff a fair wage.
